What the calculator assumes
These are experience values for Germany and Austria, not a live price lookup. The basis:
- Planned weekly shop: 25 to 35 euros per person. Without a plan: 40 to 55.
- From two people up, cost per head drops because pack sizes and leftovers work out better.
- Every extra store visit adds 5 to 12 euros of unplanned buys.
- Not included: eating out, drinks beyond basics, household and toiletry items.
Quantities per adult per week
When the shopping list lands near these amounts, the shop covers the week without anything spoiling.
- Meat, fish or substitute: 500 to 700 g
- Pasta or rice: 400 to 500 g
- Potatoes: 1 to 1.5 kg
- Vegetables: 1.5 to 2 kg
- Fruit: 1 to 1.5 kg
- Milk: 1 to 1.5 l, cheese: 150 to 200 g
From budget to weekly plan
The budget is set, the dishes are not. Flyva reads the current leaflets and builds a weekly plan with a matching shopping list.

Common questions
- How much money do you need per week for groceries?
- For one person with a weekly plan, 25 to 35 euros is realistic; without a plan closer to 40 to 55. In a four-person household the per-head figure drops because larger packs and leftovers are used better.
- How do I calculate my food budget?
- Multiply the number of people by the weekly figure for your shopping style, then subtract the meals you do not cook yourself. The calculator above does exactly that and also shows what an unplanned shop would cost.
- Can you get by on 25 euros a week?
- As a single person yes, if main ingredients come from the leaflet, meat is rare and leftovers are planned in. For two people, 25 euros per head is workable without much restriction.
- Why do my actual costs differ?
- Region, how much meat you buy and the number of store visits matter most. Shopping twice a week costs noticeably more than one planned big shop.
